The efforts of Darien High School students seem to be paying off. Advanced Placement scores were the highest ever, with 89 students winning AP Scholar Awards for their achievements. Additionally, SAT Math scores were the highest of all Connecticut public schools for the second year in a row.
"I believe these strong scores properly reflect the excellent education that our students receive here at DHS," Principal Dan Haron said. He called the scores "a testament to our hard-working students and teachers who, along with parents, have a wonderful partnership that supports and prioritizes academic achievement."
Darien High had its largest number of students taking AP tests ever. Forty-five percent of the students achieved the highest possible score of 5. Two students, Brandon Wong and Andrew Gagne, qualified for the National AP Scholar Award by earning an average grade of 4 or higher on all AP Exams taken and 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams.
"This is very gratifying because it suggests that despite the increase in the number of students taking these challenging college-level courses, we have been able to maintain the quality in those courses as measured by student performance," said Haron.
AP courses provide students with the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still in high school, and to earn college credit, advanced placement or both for successful performance on the AP Exams.
Darien students scored an average score of 611 on the math portion of the College Board SAT exam. They also performed above average on the other sections of the test. Writing scores ranked third with an average of 596. The average verbal score of 573 ranked sixth in the state.
